Huma and the Hoot Owl
Huma and the Hoot Owl
One night while Huma slept
Curled up in a ball
Huma heard the hoot owl
Call, call, call.
Who, who, who can help me at all?
Is it Spring or is it Fall?
Will you go, Huma, and help Lady Spring?
Take a elder along
And find the tiny creature
Who gives the flowers song!
You’ll have to look high
And you’ll have to look low
And sometimes go fast
And sometimes go slow.
Huma was not very big,
Huma was not very tall.
But Huma wasn’t afraid,
Not at all, not at all.
After breakfast they were ready to go.
They brushed their teeth,
And washed their faces, ears, and hair,
And scrubbed their faces, ears, and hair.
With so much care, with so much care.
Let’s warm up from top to toe.
Then we’ll find the way to go.
(To the tune of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”):
Head, shoulders, arms and hands,
Arms and hands,
Head, shoulders, arms and hands,
Arms and hands and
Legs, legs, legs and feet, feet, feet,
Head, shoulders, arms and hands,
Arms and hands. (2X)
(Now bend right over, look right through your legs,
And tell me what you see.)
I see children rolling down a hill with me!
~Huma took a ball and stretched out tall,
And rolled and rolled and did not fall. (3X)
(Now curl up tight, and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see frogs in a meadow waking up with me!
~To and fro their legs do go.
Oh so slowly to the side they go,
And back to the middle and to the other side they go. (2X)
Then the right foot travels along the leg and bends. After a rest it returns down to its friend.
Then the left foot travels along the leg and bends. After a rest it returns down to its friend.
Now both feet travel up the middle and bend. After a rest they go back down together as friends. (2X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see an inchworm in the garden creeping along with me!
~First up, then wiggle wiggle down,
And up, then wiggle wiggle down
Over the ground, wiggle wiggle down.
Over the ground, wiggle wiggle down. (2X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see eagles up high in the sky flying with me!
~Eagles proudly stretch their tail feathers straight out,
Spread their wings and look about
Look about and fly so free
Fly so free, to the tallest trees. (2-5 X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see a lizard in the woods slithering along with me!
~Arm over arm and toes, toes, toes (2-5 X)
Whoever knows what a lizard knows?
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see a teeny tiny roly poly bug curling up and stretching out with me!
~Curling up, and stretching out 1-2-3-
Curling up and stretching out 1-2-3- (2-5X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see a kitty cat outside the house hunting a little mouse with me!
~Hunting slowly around the house,
Hunting slowly around the house,
Hunting slowly around the house,
Then POUNCE! Kitty has found her mouse! (2-5X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see a mushroom standing on one leg with me!
~With my eyes open I’ll count to 5…..
And on the other leg too…..
With my eyes closed I’ll count to 5…..
And with my other leg too…..
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
I see a donkey in the field kicking with me!
~First we walk, then we kick!
“Sweetly sings the donkey at the break of day. If you do not feed him, this is what he’ll say:
Hee--haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw!” (2-5 X)
(Now curl up tight and stretch your legs like trees.
Look right through and tell me what you see.)
Now just as Huma was ready to say, “I’ve searched enough for today. This tiny creature just can’t be found…”
Someone so tiny came crawling along and Huma said,
I see a caterpillar on a walk crawling along with me!
~Hands to toes, then hands, hands, hands,
Hands to toes, then feet, feet, feet. (2-5 X)
Then caterpillar to a big leaf goes
And winds a silk cocoon.
Caterpillar, caterpillar, wind about
In and out, in and out.
You have spun your web and made your bed.
Now go to sleep
And rock on the wind, and rock on the wind.
As you grow everything gets squeezed
From top to toe, from top to toe,
Rocking , rocking to and fro, rocking, rocking to and fro.
One day a brand new creature breaks the web
And wriggles and wriggles and wriggles out!
Slowly, slowly golden wings spread out
And a beautiful butterfly flies about
And flies about, and flies about.
When the butterfly tires out
A flower will make a fine bed
Crawling inside the petals bright
The butterfly sings Good Night, Good Night,
Spring is here, ring-a-ling, ring-a-ling! (2X)
So Huma at last answered the hoot owl’s call:
How do we know when it is Spring at all?
How do we know when it is Spring?
~When the butterflies to the flowers sing!
(Now take a rest!)
